About Makerhood
Makerhood is an online marketplace and community for Brixton, Camberwell, Clapham, Herne Hill and Stockwell.
Run by a local group of volunteers, the Makerhood website:
- connects local makers and buyers
- helps those wanting to learn to make things find local workshops and courses
- provides a place to share information and ask questions about all things making-related
Is Makerhood for me?
Yes, if you live or work in Brixton, Camberwell, Clapham, Herne Hill or Stockwell. (If you don't live in one of these areas, but would like Makerhood in your neighbourhood, let us know at hello@makerhood.com.)
What can I find here?
Makerhood offers several ways for you to find goods and workshops and meet other people interested in all aspects of making and buying local goods.
- Marketplace: Browse stalls and goods to find items made in your neighbourhood. If you’re a maker, set up a stall and begin to sell your goods locally. There is no fee to set up a stall.
- Workshop: Find out about skills you can learn in the workshops section, or if you run workshops or perhaps want to do a one-off skill-sharing event, advertise it here.
- Forums: If you have questions about making or want to meet other people locally who are interested in similar skills or products, take a look at our forums.
How did Makerhood come about?
We started the project because we loved shopping locally and were frustrated with how difficult it was to find goods from makers in the area. We also believe that making is a creative, fun and empowering activity. We are all based in or around Brixton, so it made sense to begin the project in the place we live!
In the past the things that surround us were often made locally or passed on to us by previous generations. But in our global economy we have lost much of this tradition and the stories that go with it. A chair bought from Ikea tells a story, but it’s perhaps not as interesting as the story behind the chair made by your father’s next-door neighbour! The good news is that we can now bring back some of these connections. Local makers who cannot afford high-street premises can have an online presence, and we can meet and chat to people we may no longer bump into at the local café or bus stop. We can share our projects and ideas, and perhaps get a hand.
Inspired by traditional marketplaces, where sellers and buyers have a relationship that goes beyond their immediate transactions, and where you can not only find goods but also get a sense of what is important to people in the area, we began to create Makerhood Brixton, an online marketplace for those who live or work in and around Brixton, south London. As we went on, more lovely people came on board and generously contributed their time and skill to make this site happen. We also received a small grant from UnLtd which helped us create this website.
The site is currently in Beta - what does this mean?
Beta means that the site is functional and open to buyers. At the same time, we will continue enhancing the website and adding new makers and features until the full launch later this year.
What can I do to help?
Makerhood is only possible thanks to voluntary work by many members of the community. There are lots of ways you can get involved. You can:
- Help us run the site: Whatever your skills, they can be put to good use!
- Sponsor us: We are taking a small cut of each transaction to help the site sustain itself in the long term. As we are starting off, any financial help is greatly appreciated!
- Blog: If you'd like to write a blog post on anything to do with making, local goods, skills or the area you live in, you're welcome! Just drop us a line.
